The importance of light in the chicken house

In broiler production, light is very important in the chicken house. The purpose of light is to increase broiler feed intake and promote growth. Suitable light can meet the feeding needs of chickens, reduce chicken activity and maximize economic benefits.

1.Types of light

There are two kinds of light, one is natural light during the day, that is, daylight; the other is artificial light, which is to give chickens additional light at night or in the closed chicken coop, with lights to chickens lighting.

2.The current problems of broiler light

In the whole growth period of broiler chickens, most farmers are now taking continuous light, light intensity is also unreasonable, some light intensity is too large, some light intensity is not enough, the height of the bulb is not suitable, the placement of the bulb is not uniform, resulting in uneven light, as the bulb is not often wiped to reduce the intensity of light.

Broiler implementation of continuous light, although the extended feeding time, but did not increase the amount of food intake, feed reward instead of lower, increased the cost of lighting, increased stress on the flock, but also make the flock in the late growth of mortality, etc., the total economic benefits are not high.

3.The correct light program

3.1.The arrangement of light bulb:

the height of the light bulb is generally about 2 meters, so that it will not affect the daily operation of people, but also easy to wipe the light bulb. Bulbs should be evenly arranged, the light distance to 2 to 3 meters is appropriate.

3.2.Light time and intensity:

For chicken house, the first 1 to 3 days of brood to take 24 hours of light, using strong light, which can help chicks familiar with the environment, full feeding and drinking, about 5 to 10 watts per square meter, with 45-watt bulbs;

4 to 7 days of age with 23 hours of light;

after 7 days of age can be natural light during the day, and at night take the method of turning on the light for 1 hour and turning off the light for 1 to 2 hours, with low light, about 2 to 3 watts per square meter;

From the third week, it can be changed to 1 to 1.5 watts per square meter, taking the method of turning on the light for 1 to 2 hours and turning off the light for 1 hour at night. During the day, if the light in the chicken coop is too strong, you can also properly shade the light. In order to make the light intensity distribution evenly, do not use more than 60 watts of light bulbs.

For fully enclosed coops, intermittent light can be used throughout the day starting in the second week. The use of this light scheme can reduce the stress of the flock, lower the incidence of Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) and Ascites in the later stages of the flock, reduce the overall mortality rate, and save electricity costs.

Chickens are quieter in a low light environment, which facilitates growth and fattening due to reduced exercise, resulting in higher feed remuneration and significantly higher total economic benefits.
